意地を通せば窮屈だ。

説明：理知だけで割り切っていると他人と衝突するし、他人の感情を気遣っていると、自分の足元をすくわれる。
a story about a painter who tries to avoid the secular world that is full of 'importunate, disgusting, fussy, and shameless people' and to live as a hermit. The author calls this work as a 'useless' novel. But Soseki's passion underlies throughout this novel in spite of the protagonist's indifferent words and deeds

Just to live a beautiful life, or to live a poetical life, is very little part of-I'm not sure how large percentage of-a meaningful life. So the protagonist of The Three-cornered World is no good. I mean he is not all bad, but if he persists in his goodness in this world, he needs an Ibsenian way。
